Avoid injury while running outside

I live where it gets cold and wet in the winter. I don't run much outside in the winter. But come spring, I love trading in my treadmill for pavement and trails.

I venture outside for a run or walk daily when weather permits. Yet, I know there are dangers to running outside, and I know many people every year get hurt while running outside. As a result, do my best to follow these 6 tips for running safely outside.

1. Not wearing headphones when running in busy streets. I know music is a wonderful accompaniment, but if there is a lot of traffic, you simply are less aware of traffic. It's not illegal to wear headphones, but it is nevertheless a safety issue.

2. Becoming familiar with pedestrian rules. Obey traffic signals and use crosswalks. When you're running on roads with busy traffic, stay vigilant and never assume a motorist will avoid hitting you. Pedestrians get hit by vehicles all the time.

Having to remain vigilant takes the fun out of running and that's why I prefer running on trails and less busy streets.

3. Do you like running in the sun? I do. I also don't like nursing a sunburn. Wearing sun-block prevents burns. As runners, we're outside a lot and repetitive sun damage to our skin can result in permanent skin damage in the distant or not-so-distant future.

4. Wearing sunglasses if it's sunny. Sunglasses will protect your eyes and give you better visibility by avoiding sharp glare.

5. If you run in the dark, it helps to wear reflective clothing, gear or something that reflects light so motorists and cyclists can see you. If it's raining or very dark, it's practically impossible for motorists to see you.

6. Staying hydrated. If you're doing any long-distance running, bring water with you. You can get dehydrated before you know it.

Will safe running practices guarantee your safety? Of course not. However, consistent safe running practices will minimize the odds of you getting hurt while running outside. Avoid side-line your weight loss program, cross-training program, or training program by avoiding injury and harm.
